Purpose and Instruction
Our Meditation Center in Southern Thailand is located on the island of Phuket, north of the town of Chalong, on the Eastern coast. The culture and ambience of Thailand reflect the results of more than a thousand years of living Buddhist values. Practicing here has surprise benefits, owing to the gentle and light-hearted demeanor of our hosts.
The Meditation Center is thoughtfully designed and operated for individuals wanting to practice in retreat for any length of time. Offering flexibility, we can accommodate multiple individuals practicing in solitary environments as well as group retreats.
KMC is particularly appropriate for those who wish to practice for longer periods of time. These longer periods are offered in both group and individual retreat settings: we have annual group retreats of both one month and 3 months in duration. In practical terms, our retreat never stops as we continue with an open schedule throughout the year. Your individual retreat can be arranged for any length of stay and any time of year – there is never a bad time to join us.
KMC offers a range from beginning instruction to advanced meditation guidance – all of which is available on an individual basis in English. During group retreats, instruction is given in accordance with the announced topic of the retreat. Information about upcoming group retreats & topics is posted on the news and events page.
Retreat Policies
The intensity of your individual meditation retreat is up to you. On the meditation center grounds, certain policies and rules are in place to establish an environment that supports your meditation practice and promotes consideration for others. While you are on the premises, you are encouraged to follow the appropriate code of conduct. Whether you do so when away from the center during your individual time is a matter for you to decide.
As we are a primarily a retreat center, visitors are encouraged to practice meditation while here and are asked to attend at least four sessions daily. Those who do not follow this request will be asked to leave the center.
Conduct does assist in the development of one-pointed calmness and poor conduct can also be detrimental for concentration. Since the time of the Buddha, certain rules governing retreat conduct have proven to be beneficial when kept and harmful to the entire retreat when broken. Therefore, during group retreats, all participants are expected to maintain their conduct to the best of their abilities, knowing the logical reasons for doing so. Smoking is not permitted on the retreat premises, and laundry should not be hung to dry in publicly visible places. Other rules and policies are implemented from time to time as required.
As is standard in most SE Asian meditation and yoga centers, the preferred dress for yogis is white, with loose, modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.
It is assumed that KMC retreat guests are seriously interested in their own spiritual practice and will be considerate of others. A respectful attitude toward the people and things which are here to assist you, such as teachers, staff, Buddha images, and so forth is also assumed. This is encouraged, not for respect's sake, but for the preciousness and great value of the opportunity to practice and improve one's being.
